Why A Lamb Would Need To Be Bottle Fed
Maybe mom just doesn’t want it. She refuses to respond to the bonding process.
What Bottle to Use
There are many options, but I’m going to share with you what I use and recommend. So, my husband drinks a lot of soda pop in those 20 oz bottles. I keep those, wash and sanitize them to use for bottle babies. Then, I purchase pritchard nipples.
Different Options for Milk
Now, the dilemma of what to feed the bottle baby lamb. Decisions, Decisions. There are so many. And everyone will tell you that their way is best. And any other way will kill your lamb. Don’t listen to that. Here’s the truth: The truth is that there are a few different options that might work for your budget, time and peace of mind.
Powdered Milk Replacer
First of all, I will tell you that powdered milk replacer is just fine to use. Don’t let anyone tell you that it’s not. If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t find it in the farm stores. BUT, with that said, you need to know what to use and what not to use when it comes to powdered milk replacer.
Whole Cows or Goats Milk
Ok, so I have bought pasteurized whole milk from the store to feed a bottle baby lamb. And I know many other producers have as well. In fact, if you ask the question in any Facebook Group, whole cow’s milk is the most popular answer you will receive. Why? Because it’s an easy option to feed bottle baby lambs. Not necessarily the best option.

Ewes and lambing pens
It is a good idea to leave an ewe with her lambs in a lambing jug for at least 3-5 days post lambing. It is valuable to leave her additional days if the lambing schedule permits. In other words, when the lambing jugs (or pens) are full, the ewe with the oldest lambs must be removed to make room.
Creep feeding lambs
One of the most important aspects of starting lambs feeding is providing a place where they can reach the feed and ewes cannot. This technique is known as creep feeding lambs and can be sophisticated and complex, or a simple wooden design.
Alfalfa hay and soybean meal feed for lambs
For some, lamb feeding will begin with nibbling at a young age (7-10 days) and they typically enjoy alfalfa hay. It is a good idea to place a small amount of high quality alfalfa inside the lamb’s creep feeder to entice lambs to enter and begin eating. If that doesn’t work, an excellent strategy is to offer soybean meal alone in the lamb feeder.
Health concerns for lamb feeding
There are a few common health concerns that are important to address. Enterotoxemia or “overeating disease” is caused by Clostridium perfringens Types C & D. These are bacteria that normally live in the small intestine of sheep. When lambs begin consuming feedstuffs that are high in crude protein, these bacteria can proliferate extremely fast.

Meeting the energy requirements of your sheep without overfeeding or underfeeding your flock can be a major challenge. In fact, most health problems in sheep are somehow tied to improper feed.

If this still hasn't worked, the only option for raising lambs here is to bottle-feed your lamb. However, during these 2 days while you are trying to get your lamb to be accepted you must feed your lamb some colostrum as soon as after birth as possible.

If you are not able to foster you will have to hand-rear. Your lamb will need to be fed 140 ml every 4 hours . Hold the lamb's head up and feed from above its head and let the milk drip down into the teat.
Tips for Judging How much to Feed an Ophan Lamb
After any meal the lamb's sides should be straight from the hips to the rib cage. If they the sides are not straight but puffed out, you are giving your lamb too much to eat. Miss a meal and reduce the amount of milk you have been giving to the lamb.
