Desert Rose Plant Info

Desert rose has become a popular ornamental garden plant in USDA zones 10 to 11. The rest of us in cooler zones will have to resort to growing Adenium indoors, giving the plant a vacation in the summer on the patio or deck. Desert rose plant care can be difficult and requires some knowledge of the life cycle of the species.

Adenium Desert Rose Growing Tips

First, remember that Adenium plants are native to regions with poor, gritty soil and hot, sunny climates. You can’t expect the plant to thrive in overly moist soil in a site with limited light. They are also not frost tolerant and will succumb to a freeze if exposed. The plant will not survive long if exposed to temperatures below 40 degrees F.

Desert Rose Plant Care

The one thing that will kill these plants quickly is improper watering. They are succulents but are used to rainy periods during which they grow, followed by a dormant, dry period. Match your watering practices to these needs for best success.

The Desert Rose is a stunning succulent which is brilliant for any home’s décor. If you own it, you want to make sure it flourishes. Before you start taking care of this beautiful plant, I think you should learn about its needs. How else would you know how to treat your Desert Rose?

Desert Rose 101

The Desert Rose is a spectacular plant that produces vibrant pink and red flowers that are complete stunners. If you own this succulent, be prepared to provide it with loads of sunlight as this is key for its prosperity. The popular plant is also known by other names like Sabi star, impala lily, desert azalea and kuddu mock azalea.

Caring for The Desert Rose

Desert Rose Care is a piece of cake as the plant is extremely resilient!

Things You Should Know About Desert Rose

If you’re raising a Desert Rose at your home, there are a few things you must know.

Conclusion

Caring for the desert rose plant involves providing it with a full sun environment, ideal soil conditions, watering every fortnight and temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). The plant can thrive in low humidity conditions. Don’t hesitate from semi-regular pruning and fertilization every month.

Desert Rose Care

Tending to a desert rose plant is simple, but it does take some finesse. Similar to other succulent plants, it needs careful water management and lots of sunlight.

Types of Desert Rose

There are many species of Adenium. However, the most common and easiest to find is Adenium obesum. Some other subspecies include:

Pruning

Before pruning, use rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution to sterilize your pruning tools; re-sterilize as you move from one plant to the next. Remove cold-damaged growth as soon as new growth emerges. Trim long, lanky stems to balance the stem growth symmetrically.

Propagating a Desert Rose

Desert rose can be grown from branch cuttings and seeds. If you grow the plant from a branch cutting, the next plant might not have a characteristic bulbous trunk that it would if you propagate from seed. To propagate from a stem cutting, here's how:

How to Grow Desert Rose From Seed

The best time to sow desert rose seeds is in the spring. Get a well-draining potting mix with perlite or use a sand and soil mix. You can soak the seeds in advance for several hours or up to a day to rehydrate them, then place one seed every two inches onto the growing medium. Cover lightly with a thin layer of soil mix.

Potting and Repotting a Desert Rose

Repot the plant as needed, usually when the roots fill the container and the plant becomes root-bound. This can be once a year or every other year. If you do not want your plant to grow much larger, you can keep it in its current container. Keeping a plant rootbound slows down its growth.

Overwintering

Desert rose cannot endure frost or prolonged cold. Once temperatures reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the plant will drop its leaves and trigger its slowed dormant phase. To keep your plant alive, bring the plant indoors, stop watering it, and place it somewhere it will not freeze like a garage or basement that remains above freezing.

When it comes to desert rose ( Adenium obesum ) care, there's a lot of misunderstanding. Mistakes caused by misinformation can be very costly in terms of plant health. Here are four golden rules to help you water this lovely but hardy succulent positively.

1. Know when to water a desert rose

Desert roses do not require much water to survive in their native environments. However, to grow them in a domestic setting, water them skillfully to achieve the desired level of growth and flowering.

2. Mind your water quantity and frequency

As its name suggests, the desert rose is a desert plant that requires very little water to grow and flower. However, when grown at home, it requires varying water requirements in different seasons.

3. Avoid under-watering or over-watering a desert rose

Since desert rose is a drought-resistant plant, under-watering it might not take as much toll on it as it would on other plants. Under-watering is only an issue when the plant is in its active growth period. Still, the plant is likely to take a long time to die from under-watering.

4. Watering desert rose seeds needs extra caution

When propagating desert rose from seeds, soak them for a day before planting them. You can then plant them in moist but non-soggy soil for a week to 10 days.

Other ways to take care of a desert rose

Apart from watering, you can do a few other things to ensure your desert rose is growing healthy.

To Wrap It Up

The desert rose is a great plant. It looks beautiful and requires very little maintenance. Its watering regime is simple as long as you follow the steps listed in this guide. The beauty of a desert rose is enough to encourage any plant lover.

Repotting

If you recently repotted your desert rose, it may go through a period of rebellion while it adjusts to its new environment. For a while, the plant will divert its energy into growing roots instead of producing blooms. As a general rule, desert rose plants need repotting about every two years, preferably in mid-spring.

Water and drainage

Desert rose plants are drought tolerant and can live several weeks without irrigation. However, the plant needs a fair amount of water to produce blooms. Problems arise when the plant is allowed to stand in soggy soil or water. Not only will the plant stop blooming, but poorly drained soil can also easily cause the plant to rot and die.

Sunlight

Desert rose requires plenty of sunlight, and lack of light may be the reason for desert rose plants not blooming. Place the plant where it receives at least five to six hours of sun per day – preferably even more.

Fertilizer

A desert rose doesn’t require a lot of fertilizer, but regular feeding ensures the plant receives the nutrients it needs to produce blooms. Feed an outdoor plant two or three times during spring and summer, using a balanced, water soluble fertilizer.

Chemical Fertiliser

These fertilisers are formulated to provide fast and/or sustained growth to a wide number of crops and garden plants. They come in a few different forms to suit the crop/intended use, e.g. granules, liquid concentrate, controlled release, etc.

Chemical and Organic Blends

There are some types of fertilisers that are organic-based but have small amounts of chemical fertiliser added. These are used for many areas of horticulture. As this type of fertiliser contains chemical fertiliser, care needs to be taken as to how much is used. This will need to be an experiment as each brand and blend is different.

Liquid Organic

This type of fertiliser is fairly easy to use. It can be mixed up in a bucket or watering can and applied around the top of the pot. Use at half the recommended rate for pot plants in 140mm pot size upwards, and dilute a further 50% for smaller seedlings.

Pelletised Organic

This is also easy to use. Use sparingly and remember to keep away from direct contact with the trunk. Pelletised organic fertiliser is usually available as a chook or cow manure base. Some products may include blood and bone as well.

Powdered Organic

This is simply an organic fertiliser that hasn’t been processed into pellets. It is composted and aged and still a very good and easy-to-use option, but again, use sparingly and keep away from direct contact with the trunk. Available in chook, cow, and blends of manures.

Potash

This is one of the three main nutrients required in larger amounts (the ‘K’ in N.P.K). Potash is available either as granules or liquid, and is used to help promote healthy growth with plenty of flowers. I have found the liquid much easier to use. The granules need dissolving in water before application. Do not apply in the heat of the day.

Trace Elements

Some minerals are only required in small amounts but are still essential for all plants. They are called “trace elements” because of the extremely small amount needed. Usually sold as a granular product to be diluted before application. Read directions before use. Do not apply in the heat of the day.
