Tiny crustaceans, most roughly the size of new born brine shrimp. They are the best food for seahorse fry and dwarfs, but are not easy to culture and depending on their swimming habits, may not be noticed by some fry.

What do baby seahorse fry eat?

The staple food to feed seahorse fry is baby brine shrimp. They are readily available at pet stores and it’s easy for the fry to eat. A baby seahorse can eat up to 3,000 food items each day. For that reason, you should set up the tank where you can accommodate that amount of feeding each day.

What is the best food for seahorses?

The exception to this rule is Brine shrimp, while they are technical marine, coming from a saline environment, their ecosystem is much different than the ocean, and therefore do not have the HUFA's of other marine animals. Some believe that live foods are the best foods available for seahorses.

How often should I Feed my Sea Horse Fry?

Starting 24 hours after birth, sea horse fry should be fed continuously with live rotifers. Dr. Amanda Vincent recommends feeding 2 plankton nets of rotifers 5-7 times daily or whenever no plankton is visible in the nursery tanks11. In addition, she keeps a drip of diluted plankton (i.e., rotifers) going at the rate of 10 liters/day at all times.

Can seahorses eat frozen mysis shrimp?

Frozen mysis is the choice food of most seahorse keepers and breeders. The first reason is that seahorses recognize mysis shrimp as a food. Trying to get seahorses to eat pellets or flakes is difficult, because even captive born seahorses will be used to eating foods that look like crustaceans….not hard balls of dried food.

What do seahorse babies eat?

Baby seahorses eat brine shrimp, rotifers, and other exceptionally small crustaceans. Like many other growing creatures, they have to eat a lot in their early lives. A baby seahorse can consume a great deal of food, upwards of 3,000 small copepods during a 10 to 12-hour period.

How fast do seahorse fry grow?

Sea Horses older than 6 weeks have grown out of the fry stage and are now considered to be juveniles. It's a natural cutoff point because Artemia nauplii are an adequate diet for the first 6 weeks of life, but after that age, such a diet becomes too imbalanced to support adequate growth*.

How much do baby seahorses eat?

Diet. Seahorses eat small crustacea such as Mysis Shrimp. An adult eats 30-50 times a day. Seahorse fry (baby seahorses) eat a staggering 3000 pieces of food per day.

What is the best food for seahorse?

Mysis-Feast®, a concentrate of PE Mysis shrimp that are high in omega fatty acids, is an excellent first choice for seahorse food. Arcti-Pods® (arctic copepod concentrate) is another smart choice for feeding seahorses.

What do you do with seahorse babies?

With that, the job of the seahorse mum is done! She swims off, and leaves the father to take care of the growing babies. Inside the pouch, the babies grow eyes, tiny snouts, and little tails. It takes about 20 days for the babies to develop, safely tucked away from other animals that might want to eat them.

How many seahorse babies survive after birth in captivity?

Fewer than five infant seahorses in every 1,000 survive to adulthood, which helps explain why the litters are so large, said James Anderson, manager of the seahorse program at the National Aquarium in Baltimore.

How many baby seahorses survive in captivity?

After that, the offspring must fend for themselves. Large litters are necessary because only about 0.5 percent will survive to adulthood.

Gives me a place to put a heater so I don't have to worry about venturing the seahorse.

How long can seahorses go without food?

It can takes weeks for such a seahorse to starve to death, but irreversible damage can occur long before the seahorse actually dies from starvation. I would not allow your seahorse to go more than one week without eating before I resorted to force feeding by hand or tube feeding the seahorse.

How many times a day should you feed seahorses?

Most seahorses should be fed six to eight shrimp twice a day. Larger horses will eat more, so observing your animals is important.

Will seahorses eat bloodworms?

They might eat them although seahorses can be very persnickity. My gut tells me that blood worms probably don't have the optimal nutritional requirements for seahorses but might be ok for an occasional treat.

How do you feed a dwarf seahorse?

Dwarf seahorse unlike most other species need to graze and feed slowly throughout the day. This means you will want to have a constant supply of live enriched baby brine shrimp to feed them. Having a way to bypass the mechanical filtration during the day when feeding is helpful.

What do seahorses eat in an aquarium?

Feeding. Feeding your seahorses once per day is simply not enough. In captivity, seahorses should be fed at least twice per day. Most seahorses require a varied diet but will happily accept most available frozen fish foods, including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, plankton, krill, ghost shrimp, and cyclops.

How do seahorses eat?

Diet. Seahorses are ambush predators: They hold still and wait for krill, copepods, fish larvae, and other tiny edibles to float by and then nab them with remarkable speed. Toothless and lacking a stomach for food storage, the animals use their long snouts like vacuum cleaners to suck up plankton nearly continually.

How do dwarf seahorses reproduce?

BREEDING: Dwarf seahorses form monogamous pair bonds that are reinforced each morning with daily greeting rituals. Males give live birth to three to 16 fully formed, quarter-inch-long young after a 10-day gestation period. Males carry two broods per month and the mating season runs from February to October.

What do seahorses eat?

A brief overview of what and how to feed your seahorses. Seahorses are ambush predators, feeding primarily on crustaceans, mostly shrimp. In their wild state, most seahorses only eat live food. (Although H. capensis is an exception and known to feed on dead food in the wild).

How long should you decapsulate brine shrimp before feeding?

Brine shrimp can also be enriched for 24 hours before feeding.

What is a Mysis shrimp?

Mysis shrimp, Opossum shrimp, Mysis sp., Mysidopsis sp. and similar. Another great seahorse food, readily accepted. Mysis "shrimp" aren't actually shrimp, but a very shrimp like crustacean. They probably make up a large portion of the diet of wild seahorses.

What is the source of HUFAs?

The HUFAs are produced by phytoplankton, base of the marine food chain so all marine organisms are dependant on them in some way. Freshwater animals fed can be fed to marine animals, but they need to be enriched with different products containing the necessary fatty acids, such as Selco, or Ocean Rider Vibrance.

Where can I find clear shrimp?

These are clear shrimp commonly found along the shore lines and in rivers and streams. They make good seahorse food for large species such as H. erectus or H. reidi. The freshwater variety is often available through local sources, such as fish stores and bait shops.

Can seahorses be trained on frozen food?

The availability of captive bred seahorses and new techniques for training seahorses has changed that, although much live food is still offered as occasional treats or for Wild seahorses that can't be trained on frozen food.

Do seahorses eat only one food source?

It is ideal to offer seahorses a variety of foods - in the wild, they would not eat only one food source, so in captivity they shouldn't be expected to. Varying their diet allows for a more complete nutritional profile, as well as providing mental stimulation which they often lack by only feeding one food type.

How many fry can a yellow seahorse produce?

After a gestation of approximately 30 days the Yellow Seahorse can produce from between 15 and 1,000 fry. (The first brood mine ever produced numbered the grand total of 2!) The young are quite small averaging 7mm which means they need rots (and plenty of them!) for the first few days of life before they’re large enough to take newly hatched BBS. They are also highly pelagic and will always try to get to the surface of the tank, and once there snick air. Sufficient water flow is essential to make sure both the fry and their food is kept in suspension in the water column. Mine didn’t start to hitch until after about 2 months of age or they had reached a size of 30mm.

How many food items can a seahorse eat?

These can all be fairly easily cultured. For detailed information see the stickies in the ZM sponsor section and the various threads. A baby seahorse can eat up to 3,000 food items per day so it's vital that these cultures are set up well in advance of the happy event. I have something like 5 cultures of each on the go at one time. Culture vessels can be purchased and are the easiest way to culture any food items. These are an inverted cone with a tap at the bottom to aid drainage (particularly useful if the brine shrimp cysts are not de-capsulated). That said, anything that is food safe and waterproof can be used. I use a variety of purpose made culture vessels, plastic cereal containers and 5 litre water bottles. Rigid airline is useful to direct the bubbles from the air pump to the bottom of the container. It’s important to remember that the food items themselves are only a carrier for nutrition, they are not nutritious in their own right. This means that if you were to only feed the BBS or rots without enriching them the baby seahorses would not get the nutrition required to survive long term. Food items fed with phytoplankton will have a higher HUFA content which will increase the fry’s chances of survival. For detailed information on setting up all these cultures see the relevant Sponsors' sections and websites.

How long does it take for a seahorse to produce young?

This seahorse can produce up to 350 young after a gestation of between 2 to 3 weeks depending on tank temperature although half this number is more average and first broods can consist of as few as 10. The young are pelagic but quite large so providing there is sufficient water movement to keep them away from the surface and gulping air they can take newly hatched BBS straight away. They will hitch on plants at the surface after approximately 2 weeks old but won’t settle on the bottom until they’re about 30mm. I feed a mix of rots and BBS for the first few days then change to a mix of BBS and copepods. The young seahorses actively stalk the pods on the sides of the tank after about 3 weeks.

How many fry are in a brood?

These fry are born after approximately 30 days gestation and are benthic straight after birth. On average broods consist of approximately 100 fry. I would recommend providing a narrow leaved plastic plant as a hitching post. H. barbouri are considered one of the easiest fry to raise as the risk of snicking air is low (due to them not tending to hang around the surface) and they are relatively large so can take newly hatched BBS immediately.

How do seahorses form a monogamous pair?

In the wild many seahorses form monogamous pairs. However, this is often not the case in captivity. The male will approach the female and start displaying to her. This often entails bowing his head and paling in colour whilst trying to grasp her tail with his. If she is not ready she will usually not take the matter seriously and show far more interest in any mysis shrimp that happens to float past. This can sometimes result in a sharp, frustrated snick from the male. The female should become gravid (full of eggs) within a few days. Then the courtship takes on a new form. The male and female with often rise to the top of the tank, entwining their tails and circling each other. This is when the egg transfer takes place. See ‘Aquarium tank set up’ in the Seahorses article for the recommended tank heights.

How to release baby seahorses?

The male will then contract by ‘pumping’ his tail. This action contracts the pouch and pushes the babies out into the big wide (er) world. If, like many, the seahorse tank is run with external canister filters it might be an idea to cover the intake pipe with a piece of filter floss or similar. A Fluval 305 can strip a tank of babies within five minutes and my seahorses always seem to wait until my back is turned before they give birth.

Can I rear a seahorse in the same tank as an adult?

The only seahorse where it is relatively easy to rear the fry in the same tank as the adults as they can survive on the same food. I tend to feed adults with 2 to 3 day old enriched BBS. When fry are present I also mix this food with newly hatched BBS. Although the fry are tiny they hitch almost immediately and will start on BBS soon after. I witnessed one emerge from the pouch, find a hitching post and snick at a passing BBS within five minutes! One of the biggest hazards I have come across with baby dwarfs is hair algae where I have lost an entire brood due to getting caught up in it and stressing themselves to death. Dwarf Seahorses tend to initiate breeding more quickly when kept in groups of 6 or more.

What do seahorse fry eat?

This is to ensure they get the most nutrition out of the foods they eat. The staple food to feed seahorse fry is baby brine shrimp. They are readily available at pet stores and it’s easy for the fry to eat.

What do you feed a seahorse?

Live food is the best type of food for seahorses in captivity because it’s natural and contains a lot of nutritional content. This is what you should feed the seahorse daily, especially when they are a baby.

How long can brine shrimp live in an aquarium?

Baby brine shrimps can survive in the aquarium tank for several hours. This ensures that the seahorses are provided constant supplies of food. Great for seahorses because they require a lot of food daily. For adult seahorses, they will eat almost 50 times daily. As for seahorse fry, they will consume more than 3,000 food pieces daily!

How long do seahorses not eat after birth?

As for the male seahorse, they will not eat for a couple of hours after giving birth. After a couple of hours, they will start looking for food. Those baby seahorses that are still around the male seahorse will get eaten.

Why are ghost shrimps good for seahorses?

Dirty water is usually due to leftover foods fish waste, and dead plants. Having a lot of ghost shrimps in the tank will help prevent the water from getting dirty.

How much food can a baby seahorse eat?

A baby seahorse can eat up to 3,000 food items each day. For that reason, you should set up the tank where you can accommodate that amount of feeding each day.

What to know when buying live food?

When purchasing live foods, make sure they are of high quality and free of diseases. Live foods carry the highest risk of diseases and parasites, especially those caught from the wild. To ensure you’re getting quality live foods, always purchase from reputable pet stores and online stores.

Which fry have surpassed the pelagic phase?

H. erectus fry that have surpassed the pelagic phase.

How long does it take for a pelagic fry to hitch?

Assuming you have mastered everything we discussed thus far you now get to enjoy watching the fry eat and grow. On average it takes about 2-3 weeks to start seeing the pelagic fry wanting to hitch. In many cases they will start grabbing each other. It is at this point I introduce hitching posts. I use red colored plastic bristles glued into a piece of marine rock. The bristles are thin enough for the fry to easily grip. It is at this point that they will start sleeping on the hitches at night as well.

What stage is grass shrimp?

Pictured is a Grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) in the pelagic stage . I use these in the later stage of development for food

How to feed seahorses?

Hunting live treats also provides mental stimulation that they will not get as much of in an aquarium. Feeding frozen mysis shrimp at least three times daily fulfills the basic nutritional needs of a seahorse, but adding enriched live feeds and other frozen foods is like icing on the cake. Who doesn’t like cake? However, before you give up on keeping seahorses because providing them variety seems like too much work, remember that there are many ways to provide variety. If you are not interested in culturing and/or enriching live treats, variety in the diet can be provided via other frozen foods or purchasing live foods, but skipping the enrichment process. Different organisms have different nutritional profiles, and each have something different to offer the seahorses. As long as mysis is provided as the main course, and the seahorses’ basic nutritional needs are fulfilled, treats are just a bonus….. (like I said, cake)!

How much food should I give my seahorse?

My most difficult obstacle in writing these articles is trying to accommodate keepers at different places in their seahorse experience. The larger species (excluding dwarfs) of captive bred seahorses need 3-4 feedings of frozen mysis daily to cover their basic nutritional needs. Providing variety in the diet is important, but can be accomplished by offering other frozen foods with different nutritional profiles. Do not be intimidated by words like “culturing and “enriching”, as these are options to provide MORE nutrition, but are not required. I wanted to answer all of the questions recently asked about feeding seahorses, but a NEW SEAHORSE KEEPER should focus on providing FROZEN MYSIS that has NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY THAWED, looks WHITE IN COLOR, and has been in the freezer for LESS THAN 2 MONTHS. This alone will keep seahorses healthy as you venture into learning about other ways to provide nutrition.

What happens if mysis shrimp is brown?

If mysis shrimp is brown, do not buy it! If mysis looks more brown than white in color, this is a clear sign that the food has been refrozen, contaminated or in some way has gone bad. Tami Weiss of Fusedjaw.com wrote two excellent articles covering the importance of choosing foods that have not been thawed multiple times, going into detail about the dangers of feeding frozen foods that have been refrozen. You can read the articles HERE, and part 2 HERE. The quality degradation and harmful bacteria that are able to contaminate the foods each time they are thawed should be avoided at all cost. Some ways to avoid bad frozen foods include:

What is brine shrimp enriched with?

In this case, an organism like brine shrimp is soaked in or fed a blend of phytoplankton (which contains the HUFAs that seahorses need), vitamins and other nutrients to make them more nutritious. Once the brine shrimp are enriched with the things that seahorses need from their foods, they are like a big vitamin!

Why don't seahorses eat the day before they are shipped?

When new seahorses have to be delivered, the breeder will often not feed them the day before they are shipped. This is to avoid a lot of fouling in the shipping container, making the water less likely to become ammonia filled. So do not be alarmed if seahorses arrive with sides slightly curved inward. They will fatten up quickly once you get them eating. The idea is to watch their weight over time, because the amount of food seahorses eat will need to be adjusted as they get bigger. If new seahorses have places between their rings that look caved in, that is a much more serious problem and will be addressed in an illness article. Avoid buying a seahorse that has indented places between rings.

What are some frozen foods that can be added to provide variety?

Some other frozen foods that can be added to provide variety include: cyclops-eze, krill, gammarus, enriched brine shrimp, and my seahorses eat Rod’s Pacific Plankton as if it’s…..well, CAKE! Live foods include: copepods, amphipods, mysis, ghost or glass shrimp, brine shrimp, and rotifers for fry.

How does freezing fish help?

The longer the food sits out, the faster harmful bacteria can grow. Lipids and other nutrients that you want the seahorses to gain from eating the food also begin to break down at a very fast rate. We do not thaw seafood we plan to eat for dinner on the counter (or if you do…..stop it!), and frozen fish foods need the exact same considerations. One way to safely thaw frozen mysis is to put the amount you intend to use in the refrigerator, inside a cup of chilled tank water. This allows the food to thaw slowly so it does not lose quality, and the refrigerated temperatures stop bad bacteria from taking over.
