Origin and Taxonomy of Endlers
The Endler’s livebearer is known by the binomial name Poecilia wingei. This colored small fish species was first collected from Laguna de Patos, Cumana in north-eastern Venezuela by Franklyn F. Bond in 1937.
Habitat of Endlers
Endlers are native to Paria Peninsula, Venezuela. They inhabit freshwater lagoons and connected streams within the country, huge populations occur in the Campoma and Buena Vista lagoons, Carúpano in north-eastern Venezuela.
Endlers and Hybridized Strains
Endlers are classified to distinguish between pure and hybridized strains.
Difference Between Endlers and Guppies
The Endler’s guppy (Poecilia wingei) is closely related to the Common guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Although it can be very hard to see the difference between Endlers and Fancy guppy, they are still not exactly the same.
Endlers Behaviour
Endler’s livebearers are extremely active, they love swimming and exploring various areas of an aquarium.
Feeding Endlers
Endlers are omnivorous, and they often consume algae, biofilm, small insects, and plant matter in their natural habitat. Hence, they will benefit hugely from a varied diet of plant and animal matter while in captivity.
Tank Requirements and Water Parameters
This is a very small fish species, hence, it can be housed even in the small tanks. However, if you plan on keeping a group of about 5 Endlers, a 10 gallon (40 L) tank is recommended.

I always describe what I do as "powdered flake", specifically spirulina. Spirulina is high is protein which is excellent for the fry. Put some spirulina into a ziplock baggy and crush it between your fingers until you cannot get it any smaller. The adults will eat it as well.

I feed all, adults and fry, of my endlers crushed flake. To me with the endlers being so tiny it is easier for them to eat crushed than the larger flakes.

I ended up picking up some hikari first bites today. I moved most of the fry to a fry net (plastic cube with a net around it) so that the other fish (including the mother) wouldn't eat them. I found a total of about 7. Two ended up dieing, but the others are doing well and swimming all around the net.
Feeding Endlers Live Food
Because Endlers will eat just about anything we don’t feel it is necessary to feed them live food however they may provide some additional benefits not found in other foods. Some live foods such as cyclops or bloodworms or even Brine Shrimp may have the potential to carry parasites or diseases that may be harmful to Endlers.
Overfeeding Endlers
You should only feed your Endlers as much food as they will eat in 1-2 minutes. These little guys act like they are always starving and it can be tempting to overfeed them. Overfeeding Endlers can result in an ammonia spike which can be fatal Endlers and other fish.
Feeding Endlers While On Vacation
Fortunately Endlers have a tendency towards grazing and love to poke around for algae and other tidbits that may be found in their aquarium. Allowing healthy Endlers to go without food for a day or two does no harm to them and is likely to be beneficial. In fact we find that they do extremely well if they go without food one day per week.
Tank Setup
This setup is optimal for rearing young fish, whether they are livebearers or egg-layers. It requires no substrate and no decorations. All you need is a heater, a filter, and some moss or other plants for the fry to hide in. I am using a 20 gallon "long" size tank, which is shorter vertically and longer horizontally than a typical 20 gallon "high".
Filtration
I'm using a Bacto-Surge sponge filter Opens in a new window in this fry tank. A sponge filter is by far the best type to use in a tank with very young fish. Hang-on-back and canister filters have intakes that will suck up and kill newborn fry.
Bare Bottom
Although you could put gravel into a tank you are using to raise fry, it is much better to run a bare bottom tank. I painted the back and bottom of this tank using black acrylic paint. The bare bottom allows you to easily vacuum out uneaten food and waste to maintain high water quality for the young fish.
Plants
Plants, such as guppy grass or java moss, provide the fry (or eggs) with a place to hide from their parents, who will often eat their own young. Additionally, plants provide fry with a high surface area to graze on infusoria, which are minute aquatic creatures such as ciliates , euglenoids , protozoa, and unicellular algae.
Feeding The Fry
I feed newly hatched brine shrimp to all of my young fish. Brine shrimp are cheap to produce and can be hatched from eggs Opens in a new window in 36 hours. They are small enough for newborn Endlers and Guppies to eat, high in protein, and irresistible to most fish.
Update: Endler Fry Tank 5 Months Later
After setting this tank up I added dwarf water lettuce which has spread to cover most of the surface. The java moss has more than tripled in size and now hosts a colony of blue dream shrimp in addition to multiple generations of Yellow Tiger Endlers.

I lost the adult male I had, literally lost it, couldn't find a trace of him anywhere & he was holding before he disappeared, so I got four more fry & at least one of them has started to show male colours, I'm going to put him with the adult female soon & hopefully another one will colour up when he's gone :victorious:

Channoides are nice but they are tooo easy to breed (once they start to breed there is no stopping them) I ended up with over 100 fry in few months (3m 2f) at times the male would go hold a couple rounds without eating (as soon as fry are released they have another batch of eggs in mouth) as they are moothbrooders, I have to seperate them for some RR and even then the girls try to spit eggs through the breeder net! As for wilds I would have to say Macrostomas rule!.
