Purchasing barns

Head into your store and the construction menu. We’ll need somewhere for our cows to be! Look under the Animals tab and you can see that there’s a choice of four. Your basic enclosed cattle pasture can hold 15 cows. Meanwhile, a small cow barn will hold 45 and a large barn 80. You can further go for the large cow barn with the feeding robot.

Buying your initial cattle

There are essentially two ways to purchase your animals. If you own a Wilson Silverstar animal transport then you can save yourself the transport costs associated with getting the cattle to your farm.

Feeding and maintaining your cows

Cows need food and water to stay healthy. Again, if you’re using the basic pasture rather than a barn, you’ll need to ensure there’s plenty of water!

Making your Total Mixed Ration

You can just use a silage and hay mix if you want to make your TMR as simply as possible. The key thing is to make sure your ingredient mixture is within the arrows shown in the top left. Once you have a passable TMR it will show the TMR icon in the bottom right and how much of it there is in your mixer wagon.

Turning your cattle into cash

It’s great nurturing these beasts, but what we need is profit! As long as your herd is healthy, your dairy cows will produce milk and your beef cattle will increase in value.

The Barn

First things first: you will need a barn to house all your cows. In the base game, there are 4 barns to choose from:

Manure

Your cows will produce Manure, which you can use to fertilise your fields. This is an optional step, but if you're interested, you will have to buy a Manure Heap Extension. You can find it in the construction menu in Buildings and then Silo Extensions. Place it somewhere near your barn.

Buying Cows

Of course, you will need to purchase some cows if you want to get this operation running.

Delivering Water to Cow Pastures

The process is simple, but first, you'll need an animal water trailer. From the store, go to Tools, then Animals. Here, you can buy a simple tank that can only hold water for $9,500. It's a cheap option if you're low on cash, but… there are others such as the MKS 8 that can also hold milk.

Delivering Straw to Barns

Barns need straw to function, except for the Cow Pasture which doesn't require straw. As you might know already, Straw is a byproduct of grain crops such as Wheat and Oats. When you're harvesting these crops, you can enable the straw swath to leave a trail of straw that can later be picked up by a Forage Wagon (Shop, Tools, Forage Wagons).

How to Make Total Mixed Rations (TMR)

The first thing you'll need is a mixer. Open the shop, go to Tools/Animals and purchase any mixer you want. Make sure to read the description and that it says it can mix TMR. You can also get a dedicated TMR mixer vehicle, but these are more expensive. They can be found in the shop in Vehicles/Animals.

Feeding Cows

TMR is important if you want to get your cows' health to 100% and increase their productivity, but you can also feed them Hay and/or Grass, which should be the most realistic option if you're just starting out with cows in your save file.

Buying the barn

The autofeed barn is easy enough to purchase. You head to the store, then construction before going to animals. In the cow section of the menu, you will find the “cow barn with feeding robot” on the end of the selection list.

Supplying the barn

Cows need three things to be healthy in Farming Sim 22. So, you need to ensure that hay, straw and silage are all loaded into their specific loading bays. Alternatively, you can use mineral feed for the barn.

Fs 22 cows feed consumption and milk rate

I have 80 cows and if I feed 16000 liters, barely 500 liters of feed is lost per 24 hours and only a few hundred liters of milk are added. This can't be the intention, can it?

Re: Fs 22 cows feed consumption and milk rate

From my testing, a single cow should eat 14,5 liters of TMR per hour and give 5,7 liters of milk. Therefore, your 80 cows should eat 27.840 liters of TMR a day and give 10.944 liters of milk.

Bees

Bees are by far the easiest animals to have on your farm. All that is required is a hive to be built, and a space for pallets of honey to be placed. Other than that, bees require no care or maintenance.

Chickens

Chickens are also deceptively easy to maintain. You will need to build a coop or a pasture, whichever you can afford, and then purchase some chickens through the animal dealer in the shop menu. NOTE: There doesn't appear to be a way to transport chickens yourself, so you will need to pay the small fee for automatic transfer to your farm.

Horses

Horses are a unique animal in the game, in that you can care for them but you can also ride them. This provides an alternate form of transportation, and it can help to increase your potential profits.

Cows

Cows are one of the more versatile animals in the game. They have a multitude of profitable options depending on the breed that you choose to bring onto your farm. Holstein and Brown-Swiss cows are best for dairy production, and Limousin and Angus cows are better geared towards beef production and breeding.

Pigs

Pigs are also difficult to care for, mostly down to their diet (should you wish to provide it yourself). Whilst they are not picky as to what they eat, to get the best results you'll need to provide a balanced diet. You'll need a combination of the following, one from each bullet point to equal 100%:

Sheep

Sheep are also relatively versatile. You can sell them once they reach maturity, but at the end of each day a s mall amount of wool will be produced in the yellow and black marked zone (similar to the one you'll find by the chicken coops).
