They don't eat zooplankton, but some people feed them phytoplankton which is pretty much a waste of money and water quality. All clams need is good water and clean light, they'll do great just feeding off of the dissolved nitrates, phosphates and organics that are already in your system. Also, you don't want to get pellet food into their mouths...

Clams make a gradual transition from getting most of their energy from feeding to getting most of it from photosynthesis. This usually happens at roughly 2" or 2.5" in size. Any clam above this size does not require any feeding whatsoever for the most part.

Even small clams don't need supplemental feeding. The only thing I would ever try to feed a clam with is phyto. Just feed the tank. If you place the clam in a saturated solution it could clog its gills.

JKUNZ

I agree that they don't require supplemental feeding. Water changes alone replenish some of the nutrients, the rest, like stated above, comes from waste, phosphates, etc. They're actually a great natural filter.

How Do Clams Eat?

They don’t “hunt” like a typical predator because they filter out plankton from the water around them. Even if they happen to be located in an area with low oxygen content because of little water flow or polluted waters, they can still survive as long as there is plenty of plankton present behind the seaweed or other plants where they are located.

How Do They Digest?

Digestion begins with the clam’s mouth, which does not have teeth and is very small. Therefore, food cannot be chewed up before being swallowed into its stomach.

How Much Do They Eat?

Clams are very efficient eaters and will consume approximately 2% of their body weight per day. Since it is common to find tiny clams living in shallow water near shorelines, they often use less energy to move around than larger aquatic creatures such as sharks which need more food to survive.

What Happens to Their Waste?

Clams breathe by using siphons on each side of their shells, sucking in and expelling water at regular intervals to absorb oxygen from the surrounding environment. The waste products they expel are not excreted through these same siphons but via a different opening between their shells beside their gills.

Conclusion

Clams eat mainly algae but depending on their species and geographical location; they may also consume small amounts of other organisms such as decaying material or fish feces. They digest food by grinding it with the muscles in their stomach and through the help of enzymes secreted by their gills.

Cleaning Fresh Clams

The first step is to clean your clams. Scrub the outside of the clams thoroughly with a stiff brush. Since clams naturally burrow in the sand, they need to be purged of grit. Eating grains of sand will certainly diminish your dining enjoyment.

Tips for Shucking

If you plan to shuck the clams yourself, the shells will be easier to open if you freeze them for 15 to 20 minutes. Then, remove the clams from the freezer and let them sit for a few minutes before trying to pry open the shells. As the clams warm up, the muscles relax, and the shells will open slightly so you can get your clam knife inside.

Clam Cooking Tips

Once your clams are cleaned, you're ready to eat or cook them. The smallest clams are the most desirable for eating raw. The larger the clams are, the tougher the meat will be.

Selecting and Storing Clams

As with most types of seafood, it's important that you know some basic facts about clams and the many varieties of clams to choose from. Also, you need to know how to select the best clams and properly store them at home. Properly-handled fresh live clams will last two days in the refrigerator under optimum conditions.

Problems That Occur When Clams Die

When a clam perishes in an aquarium, it will lead to a deadly ammonia spike that can quickly kill the other inhabitants of the tank. That is one downside of keeping clams and mussels in the home aquarium; they bury themselves in the substrate and are difficult to locate when dead.

How Do You Know if a Clam Is Healthy?

Normal clams are quick to action. When the water is disturbed around and over them, they will close their shells. This is a natural defense mechanism and a good indication of health.

A Clam Is Not a True Filter

Freshwater clams do not clean their environment as many people claim. Though they are filter feeders, these creatures act more like animals rather than plants. They do not remove nitrate and ammonia. They add these chemicals to their enclosures. They are animals —not plants.
