a box turtle laid eggs in our front yard earlier this summer, and they hatched about 2 weeks ago. My wife and I had already decided to catch them when they hatched and bring them to a local park.

What state are you located in? There are many states that have various protection laws about boxies... I know you mean well and over-wintering isn't a bad idea...

Mike521

thanks Natasha! I'm in NY, I was surprised to hear that box turtles were threatened (I read about a few days after we collected the ones that hatched in my yard). The park I have in mind is a nature preserve about 10 miles from my house, I worked there for about 8 years and saw many box turtles there.

Hakauna

I am no expert on Boxies, but I recently got a hatchling and it is doing well so far. This is how I have it set up. For now it is in an aquarium because as hatchling I have read they tend to dehydrate. Use a substrate of peat moss with some Sphagnum moss mixed in, also some west Sphagnum moss loosely scattered around on top for them to hide in.

BoxieLover

Eastern Boxies are protected in New York State. A permit is required to possess them.

Mike521

Thanks Boxie Gal and Lion King, I didn't even know the turtle and tortoise society existed, I just emailed them and asked for suggestions. With a little luck maybe they know a 'professional' in my area who will raise the turtles.
